Most shareholders of Wall Street Banks don’t even belong to their own banks in question.

A federal credit union is a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution organized to promote thrift and provide credit to its members (who are also its customers). Federal credit union members are provided with a safe, convenient place to save and borrow at reasonable rates, with savings insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). Certain retirement accounts are insured to $250,000.

The key difference between a bank and a credit union is that banks are owned by shareholders, not customers, and are for-profit – which leads to higher fees and rates on loans, since excess profits are returned to shareholders in the form of dividends. Contrast this with a credit union, which returns any excess to members in the form of dividends as an added bonus.  A federal credit union is member-owned and controlled through the election of a board of directors drawn from membership. Board members serve on a volunteer basis; one board member may be compensated.

Funny, I personally was told about this a few months ago. This woman was getting 2-3 of these mailers from the same institution each week. She told me she did this! Brilliant!

Martha Coakley has been paying close attention to Occupy Boston, and although there have been over 100 arrests, the protests have appeared to be mostly peaceful – and rightful, she said Tuesday.

“This is a country that is founded on the idea that civil protest, rightful protest, is something that we guarantee,” Coakley said in a brief interview Tuesday at City Hall in Medford. “I hope everyone in Washington will pay attention ot this voice of frustration.”

Judge Schack is pretty remarkable not only because he questions all the suspect documents that are in the files, but because he also understands the 1st Amendment.

Reports Thursday afternoon said that nine people were arrested for disrupting the auction, led out in plastic zip-tie handcuffs by NYPD officers and Brooklyn court officers.

The judges at the Kings County Supreme Court Civil Term didn’t seem too ruffled by the protest outside their offices overlooking Court Street.

“They have a right to express themselves,” said Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack when asked whether he thought the protesters were misguided. “I have no problem with the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights.”

Hit bankers where it hurts

I’ve been down to “Occupy Wall Street” twice now, and I love it. The protests building at Liberty Square and spreading over Lower Manhattan are a great thing, the logical answer to the Tea Party and a long-overdue middle finger to the financial elite. The protesters picked the right target and, through their refusal to disband after just one day, the right tactic, showing the public at large that the movement against Wall Street has stamina, resolve and growing popular appeal.
