CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Chula Vista City Council is poised to expand on its ordinance protecting renters by adding additional requirements for landlords to terminate a lease without fault by the tenants.
The changes will be made to bring the city’s existing tenant protections into compliance with a new state law, Senate Bill 567, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last year.
SB 567 sought to build on the landmark “Tenant Protection Act” passed by California lawmakers in 2019 by closing loopholes in the law that tenant advocates said landlords began using to remove their tenants without fault, such as evictions under the guise of a “substantial remodel.”
The proposed amendments to Chula Vista’s existing tenant protections would prevent the owners of a property from evicting a tenant for this reason or to move themselves or a family member into the unit without providing a detailed written notice about their plans.
