Affordable and workforce housing is hardly a new issue for Palm Beach County.
In 2000, the county conducted a study that predicted there would be a housing shortage of 66,000 units by 2025, County Administrator Verdenia Baker told commissioners Tuesday. Twenty years on, another study from the Housing Leadership Council of Palm Beach County suggests that shortage has grown.
And rents are skyrocketing. The data firm Zumper — Zillow for apartments — said this month that rents in Palm Beach County sharply rose by 37% last year. Commissioners heard what the county government has done to increase the affordable and workforce housing stock during a workshop Tuesday, with no single effort acting as a silver bullet.
