NJ rental housing crisis: We must keep our neighbors safely housed | Opinion

Evictions are a public health, social and moral crisis.  All of the data, whether from The Eviction Lab at Princeton or Children’s Health Watch, shows that removing lower income residents from their homes causes significant and lasting damage to families and communities. The potential of an eviction tsunami during and after COVID-19 is real, and remains a constant threat for families and individuals struggling for shelter.

Like the pandemic, the housing crisis disproportionately impacts Black and Brown residents. Black, female heads of households are five times more likely to be evicted than white male counterparts. In New Jersey, 77% of white households own a home but less than half of Black households do. The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice found that the median net worth for New Jersey’s white families is $352,000 — the highest in our nation — but for our Black and Latino families, it is just $6,100 and $7,300, respectively. It would take a Black family 228 years to achieve the wealth that the average white family has today.
