The home nobody wants: Neither owners, nor bank, nor HOA can take over Boynton fixer-upper

Palm Beach Post-

Peek through the dust-caked windows of the decaying house off busy Lawrence Road and glimpse the results of human frailty and the systemic banking failures of the Great Recession.

Drawers are pulled from cabinets, pictures are overturned, horizontal blinds are mangled as if someone was rushing to escape an apocalypse and choosing possessions in haste.

Animals have torn stuffing from mattress tops. Vandals stole the air conditioner. A shredded blue tarp does nothing to cover a platter-size hole in the roof.

The neat neighborhood of milky-painted, zero-lot-line homes is left to deal with the vacant ruin as it waits years for an unseen adversary — Novastar Mortgage Funding Trust 2006-1 — to repossess the home.

To be sure, the married couple who bought the house in 1992 are long gone. The home was abandoned around 2008 when a foreclosure was filed and after a botched spine operation, a permanent disability, a multimillion-dollar settlement, accusations of neglect, and a divorce made it feel like the end of the world.

  1. Sarah says:

This house could have been saved and perhaps the folks living in it too. With a fairer Bankruptcy code. Medical problems can financially destroy people, and Banks welcome the opportunity to steal a house based on financial desperation. Conclusion – house lies in ruin, Bank got paid every cent and then some, people have long gone their seperate ways. Bank 1, Society 0.
