Courtney Mersfelder isn’t thinking about Christmas presents for her 17-month-old daughter.

She’s just hoping they’ll have a roof over their heads on Dec. 24.

The single mother lost her job amid the COVID-19 pandemic when demand for her line of work in landscaping declined.

Then her toddler caught the virus.

In September, Mersfelder turned to the Fayetteville Cumberland Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which is tied to rental assistance under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and is for local residents affected by COVID-19
