NEW YORK — A rally was held Monday in Lower Manhattan, as New York City prepares to evict asylum seeker families from its shelters after 60 days.
Demonstrators called for an end to the shelter limits that are scheduled to begin Tuesday and would require families to re-apply for housing every 60 days.
Approximately 3,500 families in city shelters have received eviction notices.
Critics say this will create even longer lines at intake centers, as families run out of time in the shelter system. They also say moving these families will cause major disruptions for children who may have to change schools or face longer commutes.
