OKLAHOMA CITY – A program that provides free legal assistance and representation to tenants facing eviction has expanded to a third ZIP code in the metro.
Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma launched Right to Counsel in the Oklahoma City area in May to support those affected by housing instability in 73111, 73119 ZIP codes. Director Michael Figgins was joined by former and current city officials Thursday for an announcement of the program’s expansion into the 73120 ZIP code.
According to Oklahoma Policy Institute, the state had 46,688 eviction filings in 2022, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, which were among the highest per capita in the U.S. Figgins said the least expensive way to prevent an eviction is early intervention.
“Nationally, there’s been studies doing exactly what we’re doing now,” Figgins said. “They find for every dollar spent on right to counsel, the city, county or state will certainly save as much as five to $10. That’s a significant return on investment.”
