Relentless rent hikes continue to take a bigger chunk out of paychecks earned by young consumers, people of color and others as inflation sizzles.

Housing — which includes rent and a homeowner’s equivalent of rent — is one of the most important components when measuring inflation and accounts for nearly one-third of the overall Consumer Price Index. And in April, the shelter index rose at its fastest year-over-year pace since April 1991.

The shelter index was up 5.1% on a yearly basis, according to new data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday. As part of that index, rent increased 4.8% in April over the past 12 months.
