City Council voted down proposed “good cause eviction” protections Tuesday night after an at-times contentious back-and-forth.

The 6-3 vote against the legislation was expected. And the debate, emblematic of the divisions between activist members and their colleagues.

“It’s really shocking to see that people who represent our community …  are doing exactly nothing to protect people of this community,” said Council member and bill co-sponsor Stanley Martin.

Council member Mitch Gruber likened such comments to political theater.

“People look to government for answers,” he said, “not for spectacle.”
