FLINT, MI — City Council members aren’t sure how much it will help, but they’ve approved spending $50,000 to provide legal guidance to Flint residents facing foreclosure or eviction, including the occupants of 190 homes recently purchased by investors during a September tax sale.
The council voted 5-0 to authorize an agreement between the city and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan on Monday, Oct. 23, using American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for the service.
Mayor Sheldon Neeley proposed the funding after the 190 homes in Flint were sold in a real estate bundle at auction for $1.2 million. Occupants of the homes have since received letters from the buyer — To Life Real Estate — telling them to make arrangements to become tenants with a new landlord or face eviction.
