Arizona found a way to keep $88 million of rental assistance it was at risk of losing late last year.
The state voluntarily redistributed the money for tenants and landlords hurt by the pandemic in metro Phoenix and Tucson.
The money was a chunk of the $315 million the Arizona Department of Economic Security received in federal stimulus money to help tenants in rural parts of the state early last year.
Arizona had spent just 10% of its federal funding to help renters stay in their homes, and a federal rule required that triple that rate had to be spent by Sept. 30.
The Arizona Republic flagged the state’s lagging spending and possible loss of funds in October.
