Michigan homeowners behind on their mortgage payments have until Dec. 31 to apply for a program where participating lenders are offering temporary forbearance, fee waivers and foreclosure protections.

Last April, the state began working with more than 240 financial institutions — ranging from credit unions to banks — to launch the MiMortgage Relief Partnership in order to provide relief to borrowers reeling from the economic blow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of a looming deadline, the state is urging Michiganders to contact their mortgage lender before the end of the year to see what kind of relief may be available, and to prevent falling behind on payments and becoming delinquent.
