The House Hack article misses the crucial fact that if the rental apartment in your house is operated, as legally required under the Residential Tenancies Act, you can be stuck with tenants you don’t want.
I created a very affordable secondary suite to help me manage my property as I aged, and provide backup for a husband sliding into dementia, as well as bolster my budget.
It worked wonderfully until my tenant’s two adult sons came home to roost, the last of whom I find scary. The RTA specifically disallows eviction on the basis of my tenant’s choice of “guests”; they’re here until they choose to move on. Given the cost of housing, that’s unlikely.
The problem of escalating homelessness has been downloaded to the individual homeowner under circumstances that erode human and property rights.
