Rising mortgage rates are taking a toll on the Des Moines metro’s once red-hot housing market.
For five straight months through September, year-over-year sales have declined while inventory has grown, according to figures from the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors.
The group’s most recent report shows home sales in the Des Moines metro declined 10.8% in September as compared to the same month a year earlier. That continued a streak that began in May after modest gains for the first four months of 2022.
The inventory of unsold homes grew 26.4% in September from a year earlier, the report says.
