STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Tottenville resident Karen Alexander just wants to go home.

In September 2019, Alexander rented her two-story yellow Sprague Avenue home to a woman she considered a friend. Alexander and the renter signed a formal two-year lease agreement.

When the lease came to its end and time came for the tenant to vacate the premises, she refused.

In January 2020, the renter filed a form through New York State’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), making it impossible for Alexander to have her evicted.
