Chef Kory Sanderlin launched his donation-based Leland soup kitchen on Thanksgiving this year. Within days people were calling to ask if they could bring home extra plates for their neighbors who are in need, but have no transportation.
“In Leland you don’t really see a lot of the poverty because it’s a rural area,” Sanderlin said. “I’ve noticed that poverty in inner cities and poverty in very rural areas look different. You have people out here who are land poor, where they got land that they inherited and a roof over their head but they don’t make enough to keep the electric or water on.”
In early September, Sandelin closed his restaurant business, M&K Kitchen, and transformed the space into a soup kitchen after recurring issues with the building’s floor kept shutting down operations.
