The United Way Suncoast announced a $3 million commitment to ramp up efforts helping families impacted by the ongoing eviction crisis – a crisis compounded by skyrocketing rents and a worsening shortage of affordable housing.
Since the start of the pandemic, the five counties of Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Hillsborough and Pinellas that fall under United Way Suncoast have seen rising evictions – including almost 19,700 eviction filings in Hillsborough and Pinellas alone, the nonprofit noted.
“The biggest concern for us now is that we have an eviction crisis that is now being made worse by an affordable housing crisis,” said Emery Ivery, chief impact officer for United Way Suncoast.
