New Jersey tenants could lose some protection from eviction after a recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court knocked down part of New York’s ban on evictions. The move raised questions about the Garden State’s similar ban.
Last week, Supreme Court justices blocked a provision in New York’s eviction moratorium that allowed tenants to stay in their homes by claiming economic hardship. Housing advocates in that state say the ruling could lead to thousands of additional evictions.
The ruling was made specifically about New York, so it’s unclear how much of a knock-on effect it will have on potential evictions in New Jersey. Gov. Phil Murphy recently extended the state’s eviction ban with a provision nearly identical to the one just overruled in New York by the Supreme Court.
