While Jon Stewart’s comments were well-intended … the banks don’t lose the deed to your house. The deed, once filed for record, represents ownership interests in the property. The mortgage loan however is an entirely different story. That’s the document the banks and MERS play with ad infinitum, ad nauseum to the point where the homeowner has no idea who owns his mortgage. The homeowner still owns his home however, so there’s a slight mischaracterization here. This adds to the confusion because homeowners who are NOT fully informed are getting bad information, even if it is delivered in comedic jest. Still … it was funny and topical … and appreciated. We don’t get that kind of negative national press against MERS every day of the week.
